Automation Designer - any one have luck with this

I want to create 'apps' to export a dataset to excel. So I run the query in the editor, right click on the data to get to the export data, fill in the information, press the little camera and then I'm presented with two boxes.

The first box is a pull down of existing 'Apps', if I choose and existing app it lets me enter a 'Name' but when I go to the Automation Designer it doesn't seem to exist. Well if I run the 'App' that I chose it does export the data, but I can't edit the properties or even see what was entered.

If I enter a new 'App' it lets me do it but then in the Automation Designer the new 'App' doesn't appear. If I search for it I find it (sometimes).

This doesn't seem like rocket surgery, what am I doing wrong?

If the Automation Designer is already open, hit F5 to refresh it. It should appear, following the steps you mention.

Another alternative - simply perform your Export. Then go into Automation Designer, select the "Action Recall" node on the left and it will be there. (Again, if it's already open, hit F5 to refresh). Toad uses Actions behind the scenes for many of its tasks, and these can be "recalled." They also appear in the "Rerun" menu.

OK next question. Running from the command line:

Toad.exe -c user/***@EM -a "Export Jobs->NAGM_PROD"

Told me I couldn't find the job even though I have a folder called 'Export Jobs' under "My Apps".

Running

Toad.exe -c user/***@EM -a "NAGM_PROD"

worked

There is good documentation in Toad about this. The subject is "Execute Actions from the Command Line" in the Help system.

You don't specify the folder on the command line. You specify either the App or the Action, or both.

You didn't mention if my earlier reply resolved your issue. I heartily recommend spending a few minutes with the docs. Good stuff in there.

I'd read the documentation but that small detail escaped me.  I think my confusion stems from folders not behaving like one would expect.  I just now realized that application have to have unique names, I would have assumed that you could have apps with the same name in different folders.   Folders do nothing but organize apps into groups, which you have to do after you create them through the various tools.

The previous reply sort of resolved the issue.   What I want to do is create an application in a specific folder.  You can't do that from the export data set screen.  I have to name the app and the action and then later move it to the folder where I want it.

Question, can you move an action from one app to another?  I appears like I can 'copy' an action but I'm not sure where to paste it.

Thanks for your help.

Folders are only there for organization. That's why App names have to be unique across folders, which is why folders aren't shown in the Window Snapshot dialog. That's good feedback, you're right - thanks.

To move an Action from one App to another - just cut it out (using keyboard or right-click) then simply paste it in the other: Select the other App, then paste it into the right side where the Actions are using the standard keyboard paste shortcut or right-click "Paste."

To move an App from one folder to another, use drag & drop.
