Hi,

I got a Win 8 Pro 64bit system recently and wanted to set up connecting to an Oracle DB with Toad 8.5.1. As I done under XP 64bit and Win7 64bit, I downloaded IC 10.2.0.5 32bit, created the Path and TNS_Admin variables and started up Toad (installed in C:\Toad). The home, SQLNET and TNSNAMES are shown as valid in Toad (my DBs are listed), but when I try to connect I get the message: "Cannot find OCI DLL:" (no further Information). I run Toad as Administrator and have set the compatibility mode to "XP SP3". I have no other Oracle installations and am running out of things to try... anyone got an idea how this could be made to work?

Thanks a lot!

I believe that Toad 9.7 was the first to be able to use an Instant Client. All previous versions required a full Oracle client.

Thank you for your reply. But I used IC 10.2.0.5 with Toad 8.5.1 32bit before (on XP 32 and 64bit as well as Windows 7 64bit). You can't use a higher version of the Instant Client and have to take the 32bit version, this much I had figured out already.

I just installed 8.5.1 and downloaded 32-bit 10.2.0.5 Instant Client Package - Basic from http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/topics/winsoft-085727.html.

I extracted the files to C:\Oracle\instantclient_10_2, added this path to PATH and setup TNS_ADMIN. I was able to connect fine. Did you download the 32-bit instant client? 64-bit will not work in Toad 8.5.

Here's a screenshot of my IC installation folder. For good measure I'd maybe grab the IC zip again from Oracle's download page just to be sure you got the right one. There are others there for ODBC, etc. and I'm not sure what those packages contain. Perhaps some of them are missing the necessary components for OCI.

I had it just like that... no luck though. I now installed a 64bit free Toad and it works with the 64bit IC files... the OBDC Connection to Office (Excel, Access) also works with the 64bit IC (it did not work with the 32bit IC version), I do think ultimately it was a 32/64 bit issue and not a Toad issue...
Thanks for all the help.

Just because something happened to work does at some point not mean it's supported. For example I have posted blogs and virtual machines on Toad World for running Toad on Linux using Wine. But it's not supported.
