Discussion:
Couple of foibles in Toad 11.6.0.43

Evening all,

I have a strange problem. Not Toad's fault, but it gives Toad a headache.

1. A connection to a database has dropped, and attempting to test
connections fails because the listener on the server has gone down.

Attempting to exit Toad at this point does the usual "are you sure?" and
asks me to save a MOE tab. I choose "no" to the save prompts and then
Toad fails to shut down because it cannot reconnect to the server. I am
going to have to terminate it with extreme Task Manager in a second or two!

2. In the schema browser I'm needing to look at the auto tasks views,
similar to the scheduler stuff already visible. These are present in
11.1.0.6 onwards. The views are DBA_AUTOTASK_%.

I can look at them in the MOE, but I'd like to be able to look via the
Scheme Browser - because it's much much better that way.

Obviously, this might already be in the 12 Beta, in which case, I'll
butt out!

There's a wee bit about these auto tasks on my blog at
http://qdosmsq.dunbar-it.co.uk/blog/2013/01/oraat_sa_spc_sy-jobs-failing/ if
anyone is interested.

Thanks.

Cheers,
Norm.

Case 1. Does Toad ever shutdown? I just setup a test case and shutdown the server while Toad was connected. Got the editor prompts and what not and Toad just sat there for a period of time and finally shutdown. I didn't investigate much, but the time was about the same it takes to get an ORA exception due to the lost connection. I assume that Toad was polling to see if any transactions were outstanding and had to wait for the exception.

I've not been able to reproduce case 1 here. After discussing with Bert I started mucking around with some SQLNET params I thought may cause the delay, but no joy. At any rate, do you have anything in sqlnet.ora that looks suspicious? You can also send user files offline. Perhaps it's option related.

RE Case 1: For all that it is worth: I noted that the timeout until the "Connection lost" message appears on my Win7 Toad (8.5.1) Installation is quite long and did lead me to think in the beginning that Toad had actually crashed. This happenes if I want to close Toad or if, after a time of being idle, I want to call up data from the current connection. What confused me was that under my Toad XP Installation, that same timeout was considerably shorter (i.e. <5 seconds).

No, never. When I confirm that I want to close Toad, and then click 'no'
to save the editor contents, the dialogue goes away and almost
immediately, the status bar updates with the oracle error message
telling me that the session couldn't be reconnected.

the exception.
I know that there were no outstanding transactions, in this case, all I
had executed were SELECT queries on DBA_AUTOTASK_% views.

I tried it again this AM before anyone noticed I'd borrowed the
database, and I was unable to reproduce it. Toad did all the prompting
etc, and then, simply exited. Yesterday, I tried about 5 times and it
refused to exit.

I'll put it down to a Windows foible then I think.

Thanks.

About 1. For the test it is enough to break the netwerk connection to get
the behaviour mentioned. I won't say that Toad hangs forever, but if you
have multiple sessions open, many editors, it takes a very long time and
multiple error messages for one window before it shuts down. So my solution
is also to use the task manager to kill the toad session. The
biggest irritation I have is the fact that first one edit sessions gives an
error, going through all the sessions and then over again, so you get the
impression that you are in a loop.

I try some testing too in some days.

Wim

Hi Norm,

1) Does it not eventually time out after 15-30 seconds or so?

2) It is not in 12 beta. I haven't added the autotask stuff because it seems like something that would be rarely used. I do hear a request for it every now and then though. Maybe it would be used more often than I think. I can take a look at it.

I'm sure I read an email from John on this topic last night, late, on my
phone. Today, I see it not. I wonder where it has gone? It's not in my
spam bucket and even if I delete something on my phone, it stays on the
server until my laptop picks it up. Weird!

John,

I can't remember what you said about the connection dropped problem, but
I have been unable to reproduce it, so I'm not worrying about it. (I
posted to this effect earlier in reply to Michael.)

On the auto tasks stuff. Fair enough that you are not adding them to the
SB. I can live with that decision. Thanks for thinking about it though.
