TOAD vs. PL/SQL Developer

Hi All,

I've been using TOAD for about 3 years now and have grown to really
like this product. However, we are being asked to evaluate another
product called PL/SQL Developer
(http://www.allroundautomations.com/plsqldev.html) and determine why
this product(much cheaper) is not a sufficient tool to replace TOAD.
Is anyone at Quest(or elsewhere) familiar with both of these tools
and able to provide me a detailed comparison(I need something past
just the marketing hype) that I'm able to use to help justify the
added cost of TOAD. I certainly have no interest in replacing TOAD,
but if I don't provide some excellent feedback of why it's better,
I'm afraid we will be.

Any help is much appreciated on this!
Thanks

Hi,
PL/SQL developer provides a better IDE for developing in PL/SQL.
I use Toad for browsing the tables and do all the stuff related to the databse administration.
Not to develop in PL/SQL.

That's not exactly true. PL/SQL Developer has much simpler IDE, but it
lacks of options available in TOAD.
I agree, that they touch almost every subject, but it isnot what I
expect. Some Examples:

1) PL/SQL Beautifier can't be compared with Formatter Plus - Formater
Plus allows you to customize almost
every aspect of how code will look like. Beautifier have some options
(some of them are quite interesting),
but not enough.
2) Debugger. TOAD debuger is a bit slower, but more powerful. Debugging
with PL/SQL Developer Debugger
is a pain in the ****. However debugger is included in PL/SQL Developer
by default.
3) Multiple connections: PL/SQL is cumbersome if you want to use more
than one connections. TOAD is much
better.
4) PL/SQL doesn't have any utilities/plugins that helps you with SQL
tuning.
5) There is a Macro record utility, but you can do the same with TOAD
code templates.

So final conclusion is you can use PL/SQL Developer for developing code
(but then again you can use text editor and
SQLPlus). For me TOAD is not just the editor for coding, it is a tool
that helps me improve my performance.

If you wan't to compare those products, just download the trial version
of PL/SQL Developer, use it for a
week (without touching the TOAD) and then write down everything that you
are missing or you take for granted
in TOAD.

Hi Bret,

Although PL/SQL Developer 5.1 explains the state of the SQL statement
with utilities provided by Oracle, it doesn't provide any insight or
advice on how to make it better, there's no ability for Advanced PL/SQL
Code Reviews.
It has Limited functionality for meeting the day-to-day needs of a DBA
TOAD Xpert explain how to make the SQL statement and the database
better. TOAD Xpert can be seen as a learning tool to provide new or
inexperienced developers rich advice on tuning. For seasoned
developers, it provides productivity for quickly creating scenarios and
objects for better SQL performance.
TOAD is Industry Standard, for Oracle and PL/SQL development and
database administration.
Quest (Nasdaq:QSFT) is a recognized company by the industry and has an
excellent support organization.

H.t.h.

Kind regards,
Don
